California has a larger economy than Australia, and many times great than New Zealand. We could pay people to stay home or we can continue with the performance art if masks and mandates and blame individuals for a problem the wealthiest few have caused.

Unlike those countries, California lacks control of its own currency and pays a substantial portion of its tax revenue to social programs that benefit other states. I don’t whether this proposal is workable, but the analogy isn’t that helpful.
True! But those countries didn’t use monetary policy but rather levied taxes. CA can absolutely do a one time tax on wealth over 500 million or some such.

Fair point, but: there's a race-to-the-bottom problem between states that is less pronounced in nations b/c it's relatively easier to change state residency than nationality, and a nation can alleviate debt crises w monetary policy if anything goes haywire, while CA can't.

I don't mean to say "don't do this," but I'd want to see how any proposed solution addresses these issues.
