Dear journalists: There is no such thing as a “moderate position.” Under Reagan, amnesty was conservative and now not caging babies is radical. Ditto Romneycare to ACA. Moderate is defined only in the context in which it’s presented. Advocacy exists to change that context.

People want to believe they’re moderate though, so there’s a branding opportunity for politicians who always try to forge a middle path. It just makes them wildly inconsistent and angers a lot of people when they actually pick a side (ie Susan Collins)
