OTOH my teenager speaks to the cat more often and with greater interest than he does to me. OTOH her utter lack of interest allows him to experience what it’s like talking to him.

This is why we have a dog. Pure, attentive devotion (except when she is barking and/or trying to finagle a treat and/or napping). OTOH cats are generally desperate for my attention because I ignore them and their allergen-infused dander. This technique also works with humans.
