I would argue we JUST showed across Midwest that we not only can speak to race and win, we must. Remaining silent about race does not make the race conversation go away. It means that all conflicted voters hear on race is right wing dog whistling. 1

Our economic populist promises cannot break thru when they are primed with fear about "law and order" or invectives about "Democrat-controlled cities" (code for Black) and immigrants taking jobs. We long as they have us pointing finger at each other, they can pick our pockets. 2
