And during one of my recent excursions into conspiracy theory discussion threads, I learned that some people believe that COVID deaths are actually people being raptured. (Then there’s also the belief that COVID was created by aliens to form a new hybrid human-alien species...)
That makes me so so sad. I know motivated cognition is a helluva drug but it’s astounding to what lengths people can contort perceptions in order to not have to reckon with being wrong, being duped and having to confront reality.

What bothers me in these instances is the fringe leaders who are in positions of authority and exploit the trust of their followers. It’s a form of spiritual abuse.
