It is absolutely critical that we say what we’re for. Not what we oppose. What we fight, we feed. Negative demands render us susceptible to unintended consequences from our wins. Defund framing risks being an austerity argument.

When we fought to “end cash bail” and won, it meant more pretrail detention. “End family separation” can mean detain families together. Must say what we want to have happen.

Yes... I've been thinking about places in that defunded their local fire department. What happened was they privatized firefighting, as a subscription service. If you chose to subscribe, then when you called the fire department, they would come. If you didn't, they wouldn't.

Ugh. Just imagine who would subscribe to private police. Terrifying.

I came here to ask what you thought of the branding on the Defund the Police movement, but am guessing this is it?

I think it is incredible and a much needed jolt to the conversation to move the needle. And I worry always about negative demands that by definition have us talk about what we oppose not what we’re for.
