A little story: The first full day my husband was in America, I was showing him the new city where we would live. We were in the Pioneer Square in Portland, OR. Utterly baffled, he asked where the "parque central" was.

When I first moved to Portland from NYC I’d see listings for apts that said things like “Close to Washington Square.” How nice, I thought, until I realized Washington Square is a suburban mall.

The fact that US is designed on British "high street" model - with main street the way through each town - and not on quadrant shows how capitalism is built into the bones of our lives. You must pass each business to get from A to B, not have central free space to socialize.
