Well then why stop there, right? Let's forgive people of their mortgages and relieve monthly rent? Surely a home to stay in is at least as necessary to human survival and progress as education.
I believe that shelter is a basic right & ought be provided to those who need, ditto food. And "slippery slope" runs both ways. Extension of your concern that alleviating debt isn't fair to those who had it can be said of curing ailments that previously killed people.

Unintended illnesses is a false equivalency to the debt problem brought on by a mountain of bad choices.

Equivalency is: Society advances & we can do better for people's wellbeing, we should. Wanting education b/c of interest or b/c jobs demand it isn't "bad choices." UC Berk/UCLA, etc used to cost 100s. Now 10s of thousands. Debt isn't "choice;" it's no choice at all.
