VP is the single most important *early* choice candidate makes. Signals - this is THE individual I see fit to lead if, God forbid, worst happens. There's no Dem he sees more deserving than some "moderate" Rep?
Further, the idea of "compromise" as virtue is morally bankrupt. Either you believe in and stand for things -- like, say, not separating babies from moms -- or you don't. Voters want clear leadership, even swing ones.

This suggests, and reaffirms, that polarization is a "both sides" problem. And that is a very dangerous notion. When one side is actively breaking laws & inflicting harm, culprits need to be clearly defined.
