One thing we need to address going into 2020. Why did Bonnie Smith, a baker in Ohio, who gets up at 1.45am every day, who voted for Barack Obama in 2008, voted for Barack Obama in 2012, why did she vote for Donald Trump in 2016?

Is she white? Then she voted to protect her identity.
@anatosaurus book and podcast lays this out along with others. Unless we use a race-class narrative we will lose. People say that people vote against their self-interest, but the white identity is a powerful rationale.4 réponses 2 Retweets 50 j'aime -

GREAT question! And hard to do by tweet. :) First/best advice is to listen to podcast episode and read background research from it, with much more evidence/findings also here: http://asocommunications.com (under Research.)

Quicker, attempted via tweet explanation: Right has waged long, successful narrative battle dividing and distracting working people by race, place of origin and - yes - gender. White women accrue returns to race both directly & in our proximity to white men in our families

RCN messages reveal how this deliberate division harms POC, of course, but also abets plutocracy - let's the wealthiest few off hook while we're fighting among ourselves or blaming some "other" for our hard times. And this is bad for all of us, no matter our race/gender/origins.
