Just curious - what do you think when folks like Beto preface with “Reasonable ppl can disagree” on issues like this? I hear a reverse dogwhistle to white entitlement, as though you must say “It’s okay and respectable to be white & ignorant” in order to even get them to listen.
Ian's a nicer prof than I am! I'd give Beto solid B here for nailing the cure but skirting the diagnosis: The purpose of making NFL players kneeling an issue is to divide and distract. But now I'm just quoting you to you, Ian. :)
Agreed as far as connecting the NFL attacks to a larger pattern of billionaire dog whistling! What I liked so much about the comments by @BetoORourke, though, was that he clearly knew his history. Adopting a race-class approach means ultimately getting serious about race.
I gave Beto a solid A on the response, just cringed at the “reasonable people can disagree” preface. But I like how Prof. Lopez explains the purpose/subtext of something like that.
