There is so much wisdom in this quote from Nassim Taleb. “The trick is to be bored with a specific book, rather than the act of reading.” —

Digital quarantine is here. It appears that folks who fled Wuhan have been digitally quarantined, likely via WeChat. Their apps don’t work outside the quarantine zone. Now that’s happened to 240 Uber users in Mexico exposed to the infected. Complex issue! A thread…🧵

The lesson I draw from these books is something like the following: the most important priorities in war are management of material resources, then operational excellence, and finally general strategy. The Axis batted one out of three, while the Allies did well on each.

“So instead of realizing its own Sputnik moment, the US is triggering one in China... the strategic solution to Chinese problems cannot be more straightforward: replicate American products, or at least find alternative vendors.” - ⁦

Another thing is--and I'm not trying to pit this against the war crimes & tragedies etc, which are crucial to learn about--but another thing I'm always shocked about is how little we learn about infrastructure and long, slow, developmental history? Vs conflict??

It’s astonishing to me that landing and re-using rockets like this went from far off science fiction to business as usual so rapidly. Amazing what a determined group of people willing to ignore the haters, pundits and cynics can accomplish.

    1) Casper vs. Purple is an interesting case study in the benefits of being public vs. private. Going public forced Purple to develop discipline that can clearly be seen in their superior growth/profitability metrics vs. Casper. Purple is a lean, mean fighting machine.

At critical moments in time, you can raise the aspirations of other people significantly, especially when they are relatively young, simply by suggesting they do something better or more ambitious than what they might have in mind.
