Saying “crazy people shouldn’t have guns” is ableist bullshit.

Wrote after Parkland when this very same talking point came up. That it's evergreen breaks my heart.https://crooked.com/articles/parkland-guns-mental-illness-stigma/ …

I would rather explore limited access to firearms (not necessarily NO ACCESS, even) based on past antisocial *behavior* (documented violence and DUIs let's say) but the NRA hates that idea because it's not nebulous enough and would impact too many people.

There are two kinds of people. 1. People with issues. 2. Dead people. If your not dead then you have mental health issues.

Congratulations, you’ve rendered the term meaningless for all intents and purposes and erased millions of people who suffer from mental health problems in the process.

No one needs to own a weapon of war. The Dayton shooter was killed by police in 60 seconds; he still killed 9 people.

Putting people at elevated suicide risk in red flag is a fair idea. Ableist? is a weak concept in many ways. It works well when used well. Push it too hard & it falls. Politics & policy = pragmatism. Ya gotta start somewhere. Red Flag

Mental health & illness is in infancy in medicine & law. It's practically little more than a few meds after a 5 minute questionnaire without followup, no titration & the address of a local group. Asking for more isn't helpful

Many people are angry, mentally ill, on drugs, on alcohol, have home or work issues, watch video games, are white nationalists, or listen to Trump but unless they have a gun, they don't shoot people dead. It's guns

I'm symathetic to this but WAY more people die of self-inflicted gunshot wounds than murders in the U.S. You can acknowledge that guns are a unique risk factor for people with *some* mental-health problems without denigrating people with mental illness.
