Given Google's data grabbing and sneak-signing people in, I'd rather see development focused on Firefox. Or maybe PaleMoon. Really, anything but Chrome.

Definitely! If you do like Chrome but like many Linux users you care about privacy and independence of the web, consider using Chromium instead, the opensource core of Chrome.
