It's about time that I shared some exciting news -- I'm writing a book! It is tentatively titled, "So you want to be a neuroscientist?" My hope is that it will offer aspiring neuroscientists honest, informative insight about our field as well as education and careers in it.

I also know many well-intentioned faculty are strapped for time and emotional resources. Being a positive mentor /is/ a lot of work. So faculty, I'd really like to know: What would/does help you grow in this domain? Do you ever get feedback on your mentorship style?

They also identify ways that faculty can begin to mediate these issues: - create "syllabi" for research experiences, w/ learning objectives - connect objectives to low-stakes (e.g., annotated biblio) or high-stakes assignments (e.g., presentations) (Balster 2017 for more)

I'm sure many trainees can identify with the observations here, ranging from missed opportunities to benefit from mentors, to actively harmful experiences that undermine their career paths. These are concerns I hear from my students almost every day. 😔

This isn't pleasant, but it's important; negative mentorship can do more damage than no mentorship at all. After interviewing 33 life sciences undergraduate researchers, & her team identified 7 different forms of negative mentorship ():

And tbc has terrific taste in movies! There's just a few genres where we don't overlap (I am a sucker for weird, self-indulgent art films and she sees right through it lloolll)

As a trained scientist and a self-taught artist, the strongest commonalities I see between science and art are the ways they teach and enable us to understand the world around us. Drawing hard lines between the disciplines denies their overlap. Many great scientists were artists
