My understanding is that cool upstate is Buffalo and Rochester and nerd upstate are all these nerd sounding towns like Schenectady and Albany
Schenectady is also responsible for @generalelectric. I agree with the note about BUF and ROC, however. But you fail to take Ithaca into account.
