Photons are light particles. They move really fast - speed of light fast. Electrons, electronic particles, move slower. Photonics experts find ways to use light particles to transmit information (and light) in a similar manner to how we used electrons during the 20th century.
So think about using fiber optics - photons in wires - to speed up data transmission in a data center operation where electronic wires were used previously. Faster internet!

lots of data transmission, sensors, imaging stuff, medical devices. One approach is replacing circuts that rely on electrical current with ones that rely on light, since its more efficient and faster. How wrong am I?
