Yup. A model adopted from the Prussians in the 1800's that organized schools like military units, placing students into “platoons” organized by age and assigned to a single “squadron leader” A system that was literally created to make the transition to military service easier

Montessori schools are a decent medium here. Accepts a lot of this scheduling/age/grouping structure but teaches independent thought and study frameworks.

Sadly not everyone can afford this option, it doesn’t exist in many rural areas, and tends to lean very “Caucasian” in terms of diversity. It’s a privilege to be able to consider private schools, charters, homeschool, or any other non traditional option outside of the standard.

I am very very very close to just home schooling my kid. But ppl have still managed to use the “lack of social interaction” argument and I am wondering if it is real?
