I don’t want to school children. Kids have enough of that already. Here’s what I want to do:

I’m confused. How did we conclude that the best way to prepare kids for the future is to cluster them into a setting where they are organized by age, into grades, and forced to learn the same things, at the same time and pace, 7 hours a day, 5 days a week, for 12 + years? Huh?

"To write is to make choices, word by word, sentence by sentence, paragraph by paragraph. Writers choose what they want to write about, whom they want to write to, and why they’re writing.” --

Interesting analogy by Training wheels prevent young riders from practicing *balance*, a vital skill for riding a bike Rules --such as the 5 paragraph essay-- are like training wheels They prevent kids from developing *choice*, the most vital skill for writing

Future of education thoughts: 1) Most people struggle to learn on their own, so online learning should be social. 2) Teachers are educators and entertainers. In an age of infinite choice, bored learners will leave. 3) The best teachers will teach millions of students per year.

Brilliant metaphor by Writing is like driving a car If you drive around all day, you run out of gas pretty quickly You need to fill up your car with gas to keep driving Reading is like filling the car up with gas When you lack ideas to write about, read more

How will you know when school matters to kids? They will tell you through their work beyond curricula. In what they create and share with the world. In their pursuit of learning not as mandated but as they desire.

Beyond transforming the way we learn, the internet is revolutionizing the way we *connect* Tech innovations are making it possible to establish emotional connections virtually and at scale. This is huge, specially for younger generations considering online learning

Best thing I've heard today: People wrongly think that you need to be an expert to write about something. Wrong. Writing is the way that you LEARN about the thing that THEN you become an expert in. Nailed it Writing is a powerful learning tool

Want to raise lifelong learners? Get kids excited to write and share their writing Once they see their ideas have the power to create value, they will be motivated to keep writing. In order to keep writing, they will need to keep reading and learning It creates a powerful cycle

Kids are special in ways adults aren't—they have a unique outlook for life and powerful insights to share We should all be looking for ways to tap into their minds and unlock their potential I’m betting on helping children use writing as a vehicle to achieve this goal

Here’s an interesting idea I’ve been pondering on: What if we got kids to view writing as a superpower? As a vehicle to explore creatively, connect, and learn in ways never before imagined. As a way to share their curiosities and reclaim the joy in learning.

We should encourage kids to dig deeper into the topics they fascinate about & promote their healthy obsessions When they obsess over things they like, they’re consuming and retaining information voluntarily while enjoying the learning process. They're pretty much unstoppable.

Today’s schools are effective at “schooling” children but fail at educating them. We need more educating and less schooling.

The result? Children still learned to read, write and do arithmetic. In fact, senator Kennedy’s office released a paper stating that prior to compulsory education, the literacy rate was 98%. Following the implementation of compulsory education, the figure never exceeded 91%.
