Racism is not just hate. It can also be a dismissive attitude toward any opinion you express, or stubbornly held ignorance that does not allow for a respectful relationship. It can be resentment that you are here, or a belief that you are the “other”and will never be “us.”

Once told by a team mem. who was a former admin. that I wasn’t being a T player/my decision to go against sharing sensitive testing info. in a CLT reminded her of “the Chinese in Taiwan who refused to shift b/c things had been done for 1,000 yrs.” 😬🤦🏻♀️ I still refused. TY

Those of us who have endured these layers of racism are forever changed. And it starts at such a young age that for the rest of our lives, walking into a room is not just an entrance. It’s a fearful moment where we scan for threats, and try to gauge whether we are in a safe zone.

Racism is Taught. When I was in elementary school, (I might have been 9 or 10) our teacher asked the class “Do you how many different kinds of Jews there are?” Of course we didn’t know the answer to that. He said “there’s Orange Jews, Tomato Jews, Apple Jews”. Can you imagine?

Last year at a shelter I experienced for the 1st time this thing called micro aggression. The entire staff was different race. It was like they had meetings about whose turn it was each day. I never did anything to cause it. But I would’ve been racist to say what they did to me.
