The city says the team is now working to clean up the coffins, to help determine which ones they will move forward with exhuming.

On Saturday the city says the team moved south and exposed five more adult graves.

The city says archeologists expanded west from last summer’s work found an additional 11 fully-exposed graves and one that was partially exposed. They are adult-sized graves.

The City of Tulsa confirms that on Friday and Saturday, archeologists discovered a total of 17 burials at Oaklawn Cemetery. The city says one is only “partially exposed.”

The other, more broad goal, is to expand the search to the west, and to the south to look for more remains. The work is expected to last for about a month.

Scientists say the goal with this new excavation is to re-exhume some individiuals who were taken out of the ground before, and extract more DNA from them.

After DNA was extracted from those remains, they were reburied at Oaklawn, in July of last year. That DNA work is ongoing right now.

It was about this time two years ago, in October 2020, when archeologists announced they discovered a mass grave. Since then, the team removed 19 sets remains, and they said 14 individuals fit the criteria for DNA analysis to try and determine if they are massacre victims.
