Today I joined the first part of a meeting via phone while walking to my office. When I arrived at work, I needed to pee before joining the meeting in person. I triple checked I was on mute before peeing, but somehow my phone got unmuted while peeing/flushing/pulling my pants up.

I feel like this speaks to the hypervisibility and invisibility of Black women/WoC in the workplace. Invisible until there is some reason to cast blame, then WoC become hypervisible.

I wrote this deeply personal piece and I chose bravery over fear. My OpEd in today’s about why I left my faculty position in academia last month and what losing Black faculty means for our students and patients.

I've been struggling with how to frame unconscious bias in a way that is authentic to me (& reality). Too often, UB is (inaccurately) treated as a separate entity to structural racism, when it is in fact a manifestation of racism. I finally found a schematic to adapt! TY, NEP!

Now that I am fully on the other side, can we talk about ways to decolonize metrics of success in academia?

I’ve really enjoyed partnering with and Rebecca Parrish to work with community resource specialists and primary care teams to better integrate social needs into our health system and provide our patients whole person care. The CRSs are an amazing team!

In 2016, a Baton Rouge officer sued me saying my actions led to him being hit with a rock. It was dismissed by the lower court. The 5th circuit overturned the dismissal and ruled that I, & all organizers, could be held civically negligent. We have appealed to SCOTUS.
