Thanks for the thoughtful post. I confess that as someone who is and has been funded through the SI2 program, I am not certain how I should interpret and synthesize all of this, but I intend to try.

I have also been funded by SI2 as I mentioned, and clearly this is an opinionated post. I don't know of the outcome of your project and whether it was a new project and I'd be very curious to hear about it.

Grant proposals without a reasonable proof of concept don’t get funded. Most scientific open source projects (incl. ropensci) started before being funded.
-
What's a reasonable proof of concept?. That the software does what it should or that it gets adoption? The data shows most funded software don't get adoption and commonly is abandoned when the grant runs out. So clearly something is not working.

Astropy got a large grant from the Moore foundation so they are no longer unfunded.
-
That's great news. It's still troubling that Moore needed to come in to do that.

This post is good but I can't see it can making an impact on funding agencies, unless there is somehow a radical restructuring in how they work.
-
This is because it directly challenges two core articles of faith that all (public) funding agencies share: 1. That grant committees can choose winners and losers, and 2. That grants can be top-down managed (milestones and deliverables).

Thanks for this insightful post. An observation we've made during the development of
@pangeo_data , is that integration proposals are a productive/happy middle ground between maintenance and building a new thing. -
In our case, we proposed integrating three existing peer-produced projects (
@xarray_dev+@dask_dev+@ProjectJupyter) to create something new. But that new thing just resulted in lots of improvements to the component projects and has helped grow the community of users and developers - Još 1 odgovor
