    It's time to discuss retiring the Python distutils module (in ~3 years). We're growing an ecosystem of better build backends for Python. It took distutils to get us here, but it's time to be freed from its legacy. (Or to argue that it's not time yet...)

    I have been revisiting pynndescent recently, and with help from the team I managed to get some significant performance gains. Preliminary tests on 's ann-benchmarks is looking very promising. Hopefully I'll have a new 0.5 release with these changes out soon.

    TIL that there's very different stances of absolute vs relative imports within packages. sklearn uses all relative imports, pandas uses all absolute (from what I can tell). The most tangible thing discussing this I found was Any thoughts on best practices?

    Almost every single company I worked with over the past 10 years has wanted to build a metadata repository.

    Indexing your data sets and documenting it is another example of a problem lots of companies have but there’s no great tool for it, so everyone builds their own. Here’s Shopify’s:
