Buy my latest book. But, um, check the preview and makes sure to read through to the end first.

Jörg repeats here a philosophical note he's sounded before, about the inherent fluidity of the meaning of a photograph. Yet, he's also happy to condemn Pieter Hugo's photographs en masse, presumably for having bad meanings? Can both positions co-exist?

"Such and such is super awesome/problematic and if you can't see why well I despair of you" is a long-winded way of saying "I can't see why either."

Photographers don't want to look at photographs. They want to *take* photographs. Instagram's terrible lack of Seriousness is in fact why it is successful. It has an audience of people who actually want to look at pictures, not just a bunch of photographers, who don't.

Tech CEOs pontificating about meaningful work and lives is the most ridiculous thing.

(selfies excepted, natch) The point is that there is a spectrum of views, from selfies to space aliens. To privilege some views at some arbitrary boundary of insider-ness, is absurd. Let's see them *all*. fin/

A Nigerian photographs Nigerians, great. We should see those pictures, which might be different from an American photographing Nigerians. But our Nigerian photographer is, at the very least, not the same person as their subject, they exist outside their subject's skin. 5/

Secondarily, the woke euro-critic seems invariably to lump Africa or Mexico or China into one big lump. How much of an insider do you need to be to achieve "legitimacy?" Everyone is an outsider, to one degree or another. 4/

The world is best understood through a rich and varied array of viewpoints. Yes, the insider has unique insights, unique stories to tell, this is not in question. The outsider, though, also has unique insights and stories. We should see both, and more. 3/

While of course I think Africans should photograph Africa, and that we ought to see more of these photographs, I do not think we ought to suppress European photographs. 2/

It is common in photoland to see vigorous pushback when an "outsider" photographs something. The conceit is that Africans should photograph Africa, and not Europeans, as a single, simple case. This is fraught in several ways. 1/

Don't get me wrong. I thought medium's model of getting everyone's drivel into one place was a great idea. But then I realized that I had just been assuming that they'd launch it all into the Sun, and that this wasn't the plan at all.

Andy please note, you seem pretty plugged in to people, places, events, that might be able to use some of these for some kind of good cause? I think Josh at might be ready to make some deals here.

PSA: Please retweet! Michael Reichmann's 20 year retrospective book, by all accounts a well made book of well made, even beautiful, photographs, is no longer for sale. Some copies still exist, but need to find homes soon. Ideas?

It's ok. Most people, normal people, don't really take much joy in Just Looking At Photos. But don't be surprised when nobody spends much time looking at your photos. fin/

And when you do, how often are you just trying to figure out or evaluate some technical detail of the photo? You just wanted to check the focus, or work out the lighting, didn't you? Or to see if you were in the frame. 5/
