If I am to extrapolate using the cost of building that fast train in California, and the price of hiring consultants to do stuff in this country, I'd say we will have ~10 miles of broadband cables in rural America.

If a student in your group, working on a sponsored research project, travels on that sponsored project, would that travel for the student count as a "travel grant"?

Good observation. It didn’t really occur to me that something is going on as we have been interviewing *a lot of* folks from the industry for TT positions.

Of course students on contract need to work 20 hours per week, which I am sure they at least double in any week.

Very much in sync with what I have been asking my students recently. Spend quality/enough time on YOUR research, not hours. Length isn’t my business. Also, my first set of Q’s to my students in our weekly 1-1: did you exercise this week? Gym? Walk? Intrusive as that might sound.

Impostor syndrome thrives on lies and the best cure is a dose of truth. Surround yourself with people who will speak truth into your life when you need to hear challenging things so that you can also trust what they say when you need to hear encouraging things.

My student who didn’t have courage to comment on this publicly said to me I am creating troubles for myself and later for him. I hope I am not. But if that ever is the case, I will take it all. 😂😂😂

Yet another thought experiment: can we find whether the acceptance chance for papers by the same author would correlate with whether that author is on the PC or not. This would be possible given the churn (in and out) of PC members over the years (demoed in the above link).

I guess also an interesting piece of information would be the difference between the acceptance rate of those who are PC members (who are also authors) and other authors not on the PC. This won't be doable with public information, since there's no way to know who submitted.

It will be interesting to study the correlation/similar stats of the number of papers or even percentage in a program for a given year authored by PC members in that particular conference, another top 4 conference, etc.

Indeed. A lot of great talks. As I was going through the photos (for a past due release date), the bottom of the slide caught my attention.
