Can't verify because the practice varies between midwives/doctoes. The ones I'm familiar with is when a bit of the labia minora is snipped off. Families normally have this done on infants so no memory of procedure.
I asked this question about female circumcision in Malaysia years ago and @_Acat_ or someone said it's just running a needle without breaking skin. Is this true?https://twitter.com/ladymissazira/status/1060713259974590464 …

Masalah nya bukan how. It’s why do it? Symbolic or not doesn’t matter. None of my daughters get any of these symbolic thingy.
-
Sunat untuk lelaki pun symbolic. Actually, banyak 'analan' kat Malaysia ni, cultural. Sama ada budaya Melayu atau budaya Arab. Islam tolak tepi.
-
Sunat utk lelaki tu boleh la nak justify, whether the medical benefit tu is definitive tu boleh argue. For female, there’s none. Nada. Zilch.

Went to a doctor to circumcise our first daughter few years back. But then the doctor advise us otherwise. It is useless I guess. Nothing more than a malay practice.

With my kid, yes it’s true. A doctor did it. It’s different from circumsion practiced in certain countries where they cut part of the clitoris.
