For day 2 of we're off to California. I spent a year at UCSB during ugrad and went on lots of trips to the E.Sierras and Mojave. Looking back at these photos makes me want to do more fieldwork in the desert where the rocks are never covered in moss and lichen!

I've just spotted , I may be a day late but I'm kicking it off with a throwback to my undergrad mapping project in the Pyrenees. I loved spending everyday in these beautiful mountains that recorded both Hercynian and Pyrenean orogenic deformation 🏔️💛

Pet peeve... the time is incorrect on every machine I use in the SEM lab. The carbon coater is 28 mins slow, the SEM PC is 6 mins fast and the Oxford Instruments PC is 14 mins fast. I never know if I’m early, on time or late 😅

I’m not really a chocolate person (my mum would find Easter eggs hidden in my room in November) but today I am desperate for a pre-run snack so I finally cracked open my viva ‘bubbly’ from September!

Does anyone else who does automated science overnight (e.g. EBSD) get sudden compulsions of dread that you’ll find a failed run in the morning but if you’d stayed 30mins longer you could’ve rescued it? But in reality it usually works fine and you had nothing to worry about 😰😅

Undergrad geology course interview: interviewer looked me up and down, then said “You do realise you may get wet and muddy on fieldwork, can you handle that?” I said I was a cross country runner not afraid of rain or mud but wish I’d asked if he asked males that question.

Last year, I left the oil and gas industry after 7 years to take on a job as a university lecturer. One of my big reasons for leaving, ironically, was to be able to tell the world that geoscience IS NOT JUST OIL AND GAS! ...

I thought these were thin sections whilst quickly scrolling through my feed... the plastic reality makes the pain that they’re not micrographs so much worse 😢

24 hours until deadline! If you're interested in mid/lower crustal rheology please consider TS2.1 Or if magma-rich continental breakup is more your jam consider TS6.5 Field, experiments, micro, modelling and geophys welcome!

Well aren’t these beautiful 😍 but I think they could be even better if discovered the world of thin sections! Featuring marbles, shells AND labradorite
