I don't believe I am a real nerd. I'm more of nerd-wannabe, or nerd-ally, or at best nerd-adjacent. But I do have moments like this morning when the only reason I got out of bed was to confirm this in my own copy of K&R.

It's fascinating to me that this question is easy for programmers, and maybe linguists, but seems unanswerable to many others, presumably because others are searching for doing something like "not pointing", instead of the inverse.

"Some authors use the word parameter to mean a formal parameter and use the word argument to mean an actual parameter. [...] This author will always say either formal parameter or actual parameter, thus avoiding any argument."

Do you know the difference between "lie" and "lay"? Does improper use sound like nails on a chalkboard to you? Has this gone the way of "whom"?

📢 We offer grants of up to $7,000 to folks from groups that are underrepresented in programming who do a batch at RC. Tell your friends! 💻 RC is free for everyone: our grants cover living/travel expenses that would prevent someone from attending.

The agricultural component is small, and it's dependent on methodology (livestock can actually sink carbon in the right context). Focusing on it instead of factors that can move the needle is a tactic promoted by vegan activists to attempt to legitimise their ethical agenda.

beware the 2020 length-extension time-travel attack: if you write a date as 01/02/20, someone could edit it to 01/02/2010 etc. the attack is practical and requires negligible memory

One thing I've been unable to figure out is how to make meaningful commit messages. My edits are usually not "functional". I can distinguish formatting and spelling / grammar correction from content, but most of my commits would be dreadful if on code. Maybe it doesn't matter.

I'm writing a book, so I'm using git, but I like to look at diffs at the word level, not the line level. So I set git to use wdiff, via Python, like so. Here was a pass just making some clarification edits over a section. What tips do you have for using git on prose?

    36. “easy to use” is code word for de-skilling and dis-empowering. it is better to educate people so they can do more and more, than give them a child’s playset
