And then you have to get your ass up at 3am to be at work at 5am to sell crap to a bunch of jerks who find it fun to get 20% off a Christmas teddy bear they would never even normally look at twice and will scream at you when you run out of them because they saw it in the ad

I was just thinking this. I haven't had Thanksgiving or Christmas with my parents in decades because my mom works retail and now my dad works at a hospital front desk.
-
Yup. I think this may be why it’s not a big holiday for me - I never could go home because I always had to work!

I refuse to shop on thanksgiving day for exactly this reason. The companies talk about how they’re all a big family... and then take their employees away from family

Can relate to working the Dec holidays and to never shopping on Thanksgiving. yup!

2018 was my first thanksgiving alone. I started a new job out of state in Nov. & didn’t have any vacation time. My partner flew out to see family. I cooked a full dinner by myself that weekend, turkey & all, & it was amazing. I didn’t have to cook for weeks with the leftovers.

My mom was an RN and worked every T-day and every Christmas for like twenty years.

Yep - I should have included health care professionals here, too.

Or like all my uncles who worked in steel mills. The mill never stops because it takes weeks to shut it down and bring it back on line. On the plus side, those shifts paid double, which the retail people don’t get.
-
In Australia it's double pay or more for a public holiday in retail..
