Another loss to the scourge of light pollution. Turn off your damned lights! Both you and nature need darkness.

Here's an illustrated view from Feb 2 with Mercury, Venus and the quarter Moon across the evening sky along the ecliptic at their respective angles away from the Sun. Mercury is nearing its angle of greatest elongation on Feb 10. A quarter Moon is always 90° from the Sun.

Someone asked me to do an explainer for why we only see one side of the Moon, showing that it still rotates. Well, accumulating so many animations now that I can say "here's one I made earlier!" –

We've connected two of our demo projects: explore 4 years of the Yellowknife sky using a looong keogram index and then sit under that night's in a virtual planetarium. Data from Try it out:

200 years ago this week Antarctic was discovered, sighted by Russian and British sealing ships. More about it in this week’s episode of the BBC’s excellent radio program Inside Science, and at the UK Antarctic Heritage Trust.

And today SpaceX launched another set of 60 satellites to litter the sky, while the ones already in orbit risk colliding. We’ve trashed the Earth now we’re trashing the sky. All for profit.

The all sky camera is located on the roof of the observatory. It shows you up to minute sky conditions. You can check observing conditions before heading to observatory for Saturday Feb 1 open house.

The brightest planet meets the faintest, as Venus passed 1/4 of a degree (very close!) by Neptune on Jan 27, with both worlds near 4th magnitude Phi Aquarii, all in the blue twilight.

This is Comet C/2017 T2, the green glow, passing above the Double Cluster in Perseus last night, Jan 25. The comet might brighten later this spring. Let's hope!

Orion on January 25 with Betelgeuse still dim, here in two views: sharply focused and defocused to better show the stars' brightness. To the eye and camera looked similar to magnitude 1.6 Bellatrix. I don't see it brightening yet.

This Sunday, Jan 26, at ~21:45UT (16:45 EST, 14:45 CET), Parker Solar Probe will break its own record to become the fastest human-made object in history!🛰️ At that time it'll exceed 95.3km/s, and go on to reach a disturbingly fast 109.2km/s on Jan 29 (~09:40UT)!😱😮🤯

Betelgeuse! Getting all the attention lately for being dim. And it is! About a magnitude fainter than usual and getting dimmer? This was Jan 22, with the red giant in a telescopic close-up set in the rich starfields of Orion.

The comet, C/2017 T2 PanSTARRS, that might brighten to become a decent binocular object later this spring. On Jan 22 it was approaching the Double Cluster in Perseus as a green blob at top here.
