When I started teaching my "Computers and Society" (https://www.cs.columbia.edu/~smb/classes/s18/index.html …) class 8 years ago, a PhD student of mine who had gone to college in Singapore was indignant: they had a mandatory first-year class in engineering ethics. Why didn't Columbia? I do wha I can.

I did 1st year engineering in Canada about 25 hrs ago. We had a 1st yr ethics course as well.

Computer science programs are required to cover ethical issues related to computing in their curriculum to be accredited by ABET (http://abet.org/ ). Not all departments seek accreditation, since it is a lot of work.

The main issue that comes to mind for me: Are there enough ethics questions in computer science that (a) don't have obvious answers we already agree on, and (b) aren't so subjective that they don't belong in a required course? I'm guessing not enough for a separate course?
