A thread today on a thing that’s kept me awake nearly every night for the last six months: How we’re going to keep @runforsomething going in 2019-2020 and why it matters that we do...

First, why I’m anxious: Running a political org is hard! We’ve built a balanced fundraising base - of the $2.5m we raised in our first 2 years, a little more than half came from more than 12k ppl giving whatever they can. The other half came from big donors & orgs. That rules.

But that was also when we were the ~hot new thing~, and when grassroots resistance groups were the ~hot new thing.~ In 2019, that’s no longer the case. It’s both an “off year” and a year in which dozens of Democrats will be running for president.

Normally, Democratic political organizations contract in the off year. That’s part of the problem — it means when shit hits the fan, we aren’t ready, & when the “on year” begins, folks have to start building all over again. Our democracy can’t afford for us to do that anymore.

Plus! We know it takes 18+ months to recruit and support amazing candidates. If we want to win state legislatures and city councils and school boards, especially in purple or red communities, we have to start today. (Or honestly, yesterday.)

We can’t scale down. If anything, we have to scale up! (More on our extensive @runforsomething 2019-2020 plans to come in a few weeks, but TLDR, we want to grow grow grow. Our mission doesn’t change. We just do more of it all.)

Democratic donors and activists historically have prioritized the flashy thing — usually, the presidency — and underfunded progressive infrastructure and local elections to the point of negligence. That’s one of the many causes of our current reality.

We can’t let it happen again. Winning the presidency matters, just like winning the House mattered in 2018. But if we don’t win state legislatures and local offices, the long term direction of our country will stay the same shitty course.

That’s especially true in the case of state legislatures... let me put this bluntly:

If Democrats do not win back key state legislative chambers in 2020, the GOP will redraw districts such that Democrats will never win the House again. It won’t matter who the president is. Our federal govt will be broken for a generation or more.

And as we learned in 2018, the key to winning these elections is great, diverse, authentic candidates running in every race (even the long shot ones!!!) who do the work and get the support they need.

That’s the point of @runforsomething. Since Election Day 2018, 10k people have told us they want to run. Plus there are thousands more who signed up with us over the last two years with plans to run in 2019 or 2020.

We have to be all-in for those folks, plus we have to recruit tens of thousands more. We can’t slow down.

It’s going to be so damn hard. But as I look at the 208 folks we’ve worked with who’ve won (and the ones who’ve lost but changed their communities for the better!!), I know it matters, now more than ever. We can dramatically change the country, one local election at a time.

We will need a ton of money to do it. Our smallest budget for the next year is $3 million, the dream version of our program costs closer to $7 million.

That sounds like a lot until you read about the gobs of money already pledged to things like presidential super pacs... you might understand why I’m on the edge of a rage blackout at any moment.
