Update: I used short grain brown rice, real ck stock, fried the sage in brown butter and swapped the walnuts for almost too many pine nuts (did not think that was possible). It was the most delicious risotto I've ever made. A little blue cheese goes a long way.

I have friends I love and respect, who have lost faith in electoral politics and/or have never been served by it. I understand the desperate need for a revolution. But the world is literally on fire right now and there has been no magical revolt. We can organize and still vote.

I have some leftover butternut squash in the fridge and I think today calls for a risotto. Some sage. Some wine. A little blue cheese. Toasted walnuts to finish.

“In the day I would be reminded of those men and women,/Brave, setting up signals across vast distances...” Maybe today is a good day to send out Muriel Rukeyser’s signal again.

“Happy New Year from Stone Town, Zanzibar,” said Centime, “a place of ghosts, if any exists.” Rereading the canon of Black Studies she realized that when taking field notes, the main question should be this: “How do you live with displacement?”

It hurts b/c I *still* value doing the right thing, and the Senate didn't. But hold on to the belief that we can bend the arc of the universe towards justice, or we'll be just like those Republican cowards: amoral, cynical, caring about nothing but power.

Everyone is rightly talking about The Secret Garden, a novel explicitly about colonialist racism, but *many* of those books are subtextually or textually racialized. I think it's important to study them that way—and these covers are setting up one hell of a bait and switch.

It's such a fundamental misunderstanding of the way whiteness has been historically constructed and the way race was written about prior to the past century!! (This particularly angers me as someone who focused on postcolonial analysis of Victorian literature in college....)

What's not mentioned in here, though highlighted in the press release I received, is how they picked these titles: they used ~AI~ to scour a corpus of 100+ books to determine whether or not the protagonist was explicitly described as white, and if they weren't, they went to town!
