My latest for Strong Towns!
Quote Tweet
Many Americans see government as distant, dictatorial, and inflexible. But Strong Towns advocates know that the best decisions are made close to home, by the people they impact. @alxcharlesdukes discusses how to bring decision-making to the local level. bit.ly/3qv9N2Z

All those arts spaces that used to exist bc they could afford the rent are gone or quickly disappearing. Like, I did kids’ theater in an abandoned middle school with a random lady who just loved theater. It wasn’t professionalizedβ€”it was just to express oneself…

In addition to more housing, we also desperately need more commercial and industrial space so weird marginal businesses can find work spaces.

A very small part of the unlivability of cities and suburbsβ€”a mom friend said to me recently β€œmy daughter loves to act but I can’t find any kids’ theater for her. Everyone keeps saying put her on tik tok and make money but I just want her to have fun…”

Indeed. There are alot of fundamental problems that need to be solved in urban areas before suburban sprawl development can be completely replaced.

Can't help but feel like the stances of "you should be compelled to take public transportation whether you want to or not" and "you're not allowed to complain about anti-social behavior on public transportation" are going to prove pretty untenable
Dude. For the love of God. Do us all- including yourself, a favor: Just admit that you're either gay, or bi, and move forward in your life with truth. It's okay Steven. Dave Rubin is openy gay and is significantly happier than you appear to be. Please!

These people are going to turn me into a Boomer in favor of work requirements if they aren't careful. If you got time to film that TikTok and complain about good free food, you got time to look for a damn job, buddy.

[Justice or vigilantism?] A shocking video shows an NYC subway passenger putting an unhinged man in a deadly chokehold. Man dies. People would not have to be placed in this situation if NYPD/Adams could keep the citizens safe. IMHO πŸ”‰

This is Jordan Neely. On Monday, he was lynched. On the NYC subway he started telling passengers that he was fed up being hungry, thirsty and having no place to rest. He began to shout in his frustration, and threw his jacket on the floor. An ex-marine then murdered him.🧡

-Having more people makes socialism easier. -The US has some of the lowest effective tax rates in the developed world. -Socialism does not mean companies do not make profits, it means profits are balanced against social needs. -Point 4 is not indicative of anything.

Norway is often pointed to as a socialism success story. Some quick facts: β€”population of Norway is slightly less than Minnesota β€”Norway’s oil fund is ~$1.4 trillion β€”It’s invested in capitalist economies β€”Norway has more billionaires per capita than the US Thanks socialism?

Yes. This NYC subway incident has really shown how fundamentally broken city vs suburban life is, and how much we'd have to change to fix the root problems. It's not just physical urbanism.

Because we refuse to invest in real safety nets and social programs in America, we are stuck between "let vigilantes murder homeless people" far-right bloodthirst, and "being accosted by people having psychotic episodes is just a colorful part of normal city life" left anarchism.

This post hits on a good point while missing the point. Yes the upper middle class does not fight. That’s why they’re upper middle class. An asshole or nutcase screaming on the subway isn’t a threat. The UMC person doesn’t need to defend himself from someone just being an asshole

People throw the word "neoliberal" around a lot; but as notes, so-called "inclusionary zoning" is the perfect example of shifting the responsibility for what once was considered a core state functionβ€”building subsidized housing for poor peopleβ€”onto market actors.

The solution is to fund them via broad-based revenue, like taxes. I.e., social housing. IZ is neoliberalism: it makes the market-rate renters in just those newer buildings subsidize their immediate neighbors in the IZ homes, while everyone else pays nothing to support them.

Last spring, when Powell indicated his intention of destroying the US economy, he got some very pointed questions about his thinking. Lots of folks pointed out that housing was the largest component of increases in the CPI, and that the cause was a nationwide housing shortage.

This is yet another reason the federal govt should nationalize the railroad lines and upgrade the entire system to higher standards. The railroad companies would then bid for sheduling on the tracks, and public passenger use (Amtrak, Brightline, etc.) would be prioritized.

You do realize that the reason that the freight railroads say you can’t run double stacks under catenary isn’t because it doesn’t fit in the open, it’s because maintaining the clearance from the wire to the train requires raising all the bridges and tunnels it passes under

Something interesting here is the demonstration of how radicalism works. The constant consumption of riot porn on TV news and online during 2020 desensitized millions to violence. Its a big reason why Americans are now shooting each other at historically high rates.

A text message sent by Tucker Carlson that set off a panic at the highest levels of Fox: β€œJumping a guy like that is dishonorable obviously,” he wrote. β€œIt’s not how white men fight." nytimes.com/2023/05/02/bus
A couple of weeks ago, I was watching video of people fighting on the street in Washington. A group of Trump guys surrounded an Antifa kid and started pounding the living shit out of him. It was three against one, at least. Jumping a guy like that is dishonorable obviously. It’s not how white men fight. Yet suddenly I found myself rooting for the mob against the man, hoping they’d hit him harder, kill him. I really wanted them to hurt the kid. I could taste it. Then somewhere deep in my brain, an alarm went off: this isn’t good for me. I’m becoming something I don’t want to be. The Antifa creep is a human being. Much as I despise what he says and does, much as I’m sure I’d hate him personally if I knew him, I shouldn’t gloat over his suffering. I should be bothered by it. I should remember that somewhere somebody probably loves this kid, and would be crushed if he was killed. If I don’t care about those things, if I reduce people to their politics, how am I better than he is?
