At least a portion of people are highly susceptible to that marketing. Next thing you know, what goes from a "hey I visited a gun shop" comes to "You know what? Yeah. Fuck you, fuckin' liberals. I love my guns!" etc. And it just escalates from there.

Then you start getting recommendations for conservative "groups". You've met a few friends. They're in these groups. Hey, Facebook is like "yo, you are friends with these 2 people, they're in this group, you have similar interests, you might like this group, too!"

I use the whole gun store thing as an example; but similar things occur with "parent groups" and other stuff. A lot of these facebook groups are really tailored towards self identity and lifestyle. Which is where I think a lot of the danger comes in.

I see a LOT of bullshit spread on social media. Some of it is reasonably innocuous sharing for end users: things like pet food recalls. That's a big one that people like to share. And I'm guessing that the types that share these are highly susceptible to other deceptive shit.

Interestingly, I think this is where it starts. And we should look into why these types of people share such misinformation, and what about that type of information compels them to share it.

I do think it's because a lot of these groups are generally tied to social identity and lifestyle. So when you try to 'de-program' this type of behavior, you can't, because it's almost an assault on their identity.

But it's the same types of people that fall for MLMs, crystals, essential oils, vitamins, etc. Their world is already filled with disinformation and lack of critical thinking.

But also our minds are very powerful so even if crystals/oils aren’t... ugh what’s the word... like ‘real’ your mind can still make it seem like they work. Like a placebo?

It’s unfortunately that line of thinking that leads to the crazy. Even if you’re not. :)
