    Also, the wizarding world has clear wand control measures. It wasn’t allowed to use magic to kill or hurt, and young people had massive additional restrictions on their wand usage. Breaking these rules could result in imprisonment and loss of the privilege of having a wand.

    We hadn't talked at length about this in years—since I first came out to her senior year of HS because I wanted to impress a guy I liked who had come out too. I hated and was afraid of myself for a decade—moving home recently made me fear I'd lose the self I'd built since then.

    The decade before I left home for college held some of the hardest challenges I've faced—trying to understand what it means to be gay whilst being bullied about it relentlessly, and to hide it all from family. gave me the window to talk about all that with my mom.
