Worth checking out Livy 7.41.8 for mention of the equites (cav) getting 3 times as much pay as pedites (inf). I think this is the earliest incidence of stratified pay in Roman Army.

Also, worth bearing in mind that the distribution of booty was also very important. In Greece and Rome, from quite early on, we see examples of this being stratified. Check out The Greek State at war (Pritchett) or Italian Manpower (Brunt) for some nice tables of this.
