If internodes are springs, maybe add wind, then a rule for "thigmotropism" where "springs that bend get strengthened"? Add "multiplant ragplant physics": very weak springs give vines? i am really looking forward to implementing wind! i read a paper which posited that the reason for the ratio of thicknesses in tree branches had more to do with spring behavior in wind than it did a sort of "combined water pipe diameter" vascular organizing principle.
