I've done The Hobbit both ways, and the songs in the audiobook were actually sung, and the effect was totally different. On paper I skimmed them for the gist and moved on. In the audiobook they were worth going back to replay again.

Mixed results for nonfiction, but audio books are WAY better for fiction that involves dialects and accents. Terry Pratchett’s Nac Mac Feegle an especial case in point.
