This point is so important. The changes necessary to make software systems robust enough to sustain operations without human operators paradoxically results in a system that increasingly relies on humans to cope with the increased complexity.

Where describes eloquently how anomaly response in production systems is much different than what is labeled as “debugging”

IMO, one of the most powerful and overlooked techniques. Read ’s post and then one of the first descriptions as well:

This article is outstanding, rivaling 's "How Complex Systems Fail" in what we can learn from it and adding onto it in some interesting ways. Highly recommended read.

"The decision to describe some set of activities as an incident is a judgment made by people above the line. Thus, an incident begins when someone says that it has begun and ends when someone says it has ended...incidents are constructed."

My issue isn’t with Ford, it’s with the original aphorism that gets trotted out to over-inflate lone innovator ideas at the expense of condescendingly dismissing user experiences.

I really can’t stand this aphorism, often repeated. If Henry Ford had asked people what they needed, listened very carefully, and applied critical thinking, he might have produced much better automobiles and happier customers than he actually ended up with.

It would be a shame if this video that exposes Mitch McConnell got tons of retweets and moved from 580,000 views to 1 Million views by next week.

The hardest thing an intelligent person can do is to admit their ignorance in an area where everyone expects them to already know how to do the thing…and be vulnerable while asking basic questions. Only intelligent people do this very difficult thing, I have noticed.

Fun fact: "If you can't measure it, you can't manage it" is a misquote. I know, I got it wrong for *years* too! The full Deming quote is actually: “It is wrong to suppose that if you can't measure it, you can't manage it – a costly myth.”

Even if it doesn’t have “customer impact” associated, if engineers familiar and responsible for production systems thinks it should be an incident, then it. is. an. incident. That’s the criteria. Your competition is *hoping* you’ll use a static set of definitions/severity. 🙂
