Last fall, AG @EricHolder visited @ncatsuaggies to meet with student-activists and community leaders who have been impacted by gerrymandering and decided to take a stand against the undemocratic manipulation of our elections. Join us ➡️ https://bit.ly/2zMZrVK pic.twitter.com/91FT7wucxR

Today on the anniversary of the Brown v. Board of Education ruling when SCOTUS unanimously held that segregation in public schools violates the Equal Protection Clause of our Constitution, we are reminded that our battle against inequality - in its many forms - continues.

Over the last decade, North Carolina A&T University @ncatsuaggies, the nation's largest HBCU, has been subjected to both partisan and racial gerrymanders that have diluted the Black vote.

In 2011, A&T's campus was packed into a long & contorted congressional district (CD12) that ran alongside Interstate 85, from Greensboro to Charlotte. That map was struck down in a case that made its way to SCOTUS, which held that CD12 was an unconstitutional racial gerrymander.

Knowing that they could no longer get away with racial gerrymandering, self-serving politicians determined to preserve their political power found another way to diminish the voices of Black students and communities of color. Partisan gerrymandering.

In 2016, after new maps were ordered to remedy the prior map’s racial gerrymandering, elected officials then split the @ncatsuaggies campus into TWO congressional districts - again diluting the voting power of Black students. This map was also found to be unconstitutional.pic.twitter.com/Usk8VDCge2

As we celebrate and remember those who fought so hard for equal treatment under the law, we recognize too that we must continue to stand against political forces that use division and oppression to hold onto ill-gotten power.
