Twitterverse, my cousin moved into an apartment in Charlotte in which the mgmt company concealed toxic black mold. She got sick from it, lost her job, is homeless. It is devastating & infuriating. Full story on gofundme page. *Please* share and/or donate.

Institutionalized patriarchy in urban planning is real and ongoing. See, for example, the fight for public restrooms, which should be a basic, standard component of city infrastructure.

"Current conceptions of difference presuppose binary categorizations where gender and other forms of difference must be placed in opposition…Thus, in producing urban space, gendered spaces or needs are seen to be special accommodation…” Yasminah Beebeejaun (2017)

Or, as Fainstein says a few pages later, “justice, not growth, should be the operative rhetoric surrounding development activities.”

Reparations should be a core theme in urban planning, with plans and programs designed accordingly.

Just say no to public dollars spent on private stadiums.

I don't know how I missed this news, but I'm delighted to learn that Wayne County, New York, my old summertime stomping ground, has started a . The increase in vacancy was noticeable over the 15 years I spent in the area.

Putting the dollar figure in context: $700-$800M is on par with, if not less than, the going rate for a publicly financed stadium. It’s time for public dollars to fund public housing that *stays* public. DC can actually make this happen. What’s lacking is will, not ability.

Cities that have legalized ADUs are seeing low uptake, including DC. This pilot program in Los Angeles aims to incentivize homeowners to build ADUs and rent them to Section 8 voucher recipients.

I can think of multiple buildings in that fit this description. In this neighborhood of old buildings, new owners file for various exemptions to eliminate rent control. Meanwhile the overall supply of housing units remains constrained.

People are upset by the title of this. But it’s mostly quite good, discussing land value (+) and supply(-) effects (quibbles: misses potential amenity effects and uses “filtering” incorrectly).

HUD is working hard...to reinforce segregation and make housing discrimination easier. More on the unjust rollback of fair housing regulations:

It's more about a shift in inner perspective, where we're not so hard on ourselves, that makes it easier to speak up and engage and ask questions when it's safe, or safe enough, or worth the risk to do so.

Some groups face disproportionate risk of being judged, with repercussions, when they ask questions and reveal a sense of not-knowing. This isn't meant to diminish or deny that reality. I've experienced it. Others have experienced it far worse than me.

Last night, after watching a few other students deliver their monologues, I ended up winging it. I'm not going to win any Oscars, but it was, in fact, fine. Fun, even.

It's really okay -- and believing that means the process of learning becomes fun. Maybe others will judge you. But forget them. You're the one who comes out better for it. You're learning and growing.
