And that’s not to say we shouldn’t engage with AI - we need to organize to protect ourselves with legislation, and use it as a tool where it makes sense. I’m optimistic there are paths forward that can use this tech AND respect artists. More reading here:

Design is a service industry, and most designers know that the real key to doing great work is finding clients that value and respect what you bring to the table. The people who want to replace artists and designers with AI never fell into that category, and probably never will.

It’s not just a convenience or cost thing. Some people have always resented artists for having skills they don’t, and now they’re positively giddy about the idea of “putting them in their place” or making them get a “real job”, because they NEVER respected artists to begin with.

I’ve been thinking about why it seems some people are so gleeful about AI replacing human artists/designers, and it comes down to not wanting to deal with artists as real, messy people with thoughts, needs, political stances. They resent having to treat people with respect.

I’m worried that our desire to create frictionless lives means creating unconnected lives. Our connections inevitably create friction because two lives or twenty lives cannot reasonably skip out on friction and have connection. But we create this disassociated living.
