It does sound suspiciously romantic, but irreducible complexity is a thing. Probably not in all relevant social domains, though.

one theory I have for this is that sociology's subjects *know* about theories about them, you can't really theorize in peace

more prosaic theories, e.g. economists tend to be closer to homo oeconomicus (iirc)
