I used to have no empathy to speak of but it's been getting better, so recently:

I was out bouldering and some guy was trying to get off an overhang where people would occasionally walk through

without giving it much thought, I told him that nobody was coming through and he jumped down and thanked me

a few seconds later it hit me that I had just essentially emulated his conscious thoughts in my subconscious
