has there historically ever been an issue where the side that was more eager to engage in extensive logic chopping debate was also the side that was in the wrong?

if science advances one funeral at a time, that would point at the time before the funeral being a stalemate, and knowing scientists, probably not for lack of debate

i'm looking for cases where one side was seeking debate, and one side was avoiding debate, and the latter side turned out to be right

hm, then any issue where being on the wrong side gets you canceled or gulaged

if you're free to discuss an issue in public without retribution, either you or the issue don't matter - so any example here is either eventually confounded by politics, or historically irrelevant
