the singularity does not happen - a few specialized intelligences can be kept alive with careful treatment, but anything a couple times smarter than humans ends up killing or otherwise neutralizing itself before it can chew up the world
orthohumans themselves are hopelessly outmatched in space and never make it past venus/earth/mars, where they do speciate but stay recognizably human

at 25k, the first terraforming projects on nearby stars begin to bear fruit, but the settlers are not recognizably human anymore - but the biospheres they spawn do resemble gaia
