hard to say it without rephrasing the OP, but the issue being that when the goal is to keep AIs out of sentience club, many of the remaining lines you can draw will exclude increasing % of the human population

and when motivated reasoning about "what makes a human" and "what makes humans special" and factual evidence contradicting much of that reasoning meet, you can expect religious wars
