The narrative is that there has been some fundamental break, with monarchic forms of governance in the past, and with democratic forms in the future -- but what if it's simply the same pattern that had been happening for millennia made "hyperreal" by proliferation of media?

Counterfactual history (from the point of view of memetic theory): The "meme" that had killed the king "wants" us to believe that the king will never come back. Had it been otherwise, the king would not have been killed.
